The World is our Classroom: The Freedom That Comes With Homeschooling!

Dear Kiddos,
As virtual school started up for your friends, after hearing some of the frustrations of parents and children, I now have 0 regrets about pulling you out of public school for the year. Life is just much simpler and you guys don't have to sit in front of a screen at all to learn. The world is our classroom! With the temperatures tolerable and the rain clearing up, we tried to spend as much time outside. This means lots of quality roly poly time.
Finding "treasures" in nature.

And stone skipping.
Our solar cookers are slowly coming along. We learned about different ways light can react when it hits different materials, so then we talked about including those types of surfaces on our solar cooker. We started learning about heat sources, and this week, we will be learning about insulators and conductors.
You guys have decided to paint the outside of your solar cookers black, but you are wondering what to do on the inside, so we are going to do a mini-experiment to see what type of black material would absorb and hold the most heat.
Since kids have not been going to school in person yet, we are taking advantage of the available space for recess.

Hailey, you are probably the most cautious out of the 3 kids, so when you finally felt comfortable climbing this, it was a big deal. If you knew I was closer, you'd probably command me to "dance!" like you sometimes do when you finish your veggies. (shakes my head...what have I started?)
Meanwhile, Nathan was diving headfirst into couch cushions and Hannah was climbing up the sides of laddered chairs when they were your age.

I've been surprised at how much progress that you guys have made in your studies, and for the most part, the point system has been very helpful to motivate you guys to start your work without a lot of grumbling.

Hannah, you were very motivated to finish one of your math workbooks because there was a project at the end where you could build a fort. I think you were thinking of building a fort that would be big enough for you (with towers and everything). After warning you that cardboard isn't the most structurally sound material to build a fort, you decided to make a ship instead. After about 5 minutes you gave up and looked very disheartened. In a normal situation, I would probably help you out, but with Hailey starting to drop naps, and being super clingy lately, I redirected you to make a boat for you dolls. You were pretty excited about it and set to work. You even made a palm tree for the Island that they would be stuck on.
And here's the inside of the boat. You basically used up half a roll of tape to make this boat, but you were creating and happy to be doing so.
Hailey, you had your weekly Chinese storytime and you guys learned the character for "cry." The teacher always comes up with such clever crafts that kids like you can do mostly by yourself.
Then, I think she drew a dinosaur on her paper and you proceeded to draw you own dinosaur...which I think you did an excellent job of doing, for an almost 3 year old kid!
For art this week, we made more 3-D cards. Last week, we learned the basic concepts, and then this time, I put the materials in front of you and let you guys just go crazy.

Well, that's about it for this week. I have some exciting adventures to share with you next week. Until then,
Love,

Mommy

P.S. We will be transitioning to Math-U-See for math starting in October. I think both kids officially already know what they need to know for this year, Nathan, you will be starting on multiplication and Hannah, you will continue to work on really understanding addition and subtraction well.
