Summer 2022 Part 1 of 5

Dear Kiddos,
As soon as school got out, we packed our cars and went camping at South Llano River state park. We went with another family and that made camping that much more fun. The weather was nice the first day, clear skies, and a brilliant night sky, but the second day was muggy, overcast and just hot.

After we set up our camp site, we cooked up some hot dogs and s'mores for dinner.
There was a burn ban, but charcoal was ok, so we made do with radiant heat.
After dinner, we decided to check out the river. My only rule was to stay in water that is shallower than knee deep. Nathan, you were very into skipping rocks. After a few dozen attempts, you started to get pretty good at it.
We even got a chance to snap a picture.

Ya'll found some pretty cool rocks that you wanted to keep.
And we also found a lot of little clams as well.

But in the end, the knee deep rule was conquered by gravity.

That night, we stayed up to play some games, watch the stars, and saw an armadillo wandering through the camp site. The next morning we got up and went on a short hike before it got too hot.

Then we went back to the river and spent a good few hours playing before it was lunch time. After lunch, we went back to the river for a bit and then came back to the campsite. We should've stayed at the river becasue the water was cool and the campsite was not. Hailey ended up getting tired and grumpy, so dad turned on the AC in the car and brought you into the car for a nap. I went into town to get some cold watermelon. That was a good move on both our parts.
We made more s'mores that second evening, but tried to head to bed earlier because everyone was a bit more tired from a long day in the sun.

Hailey started martial arts at the same dojo that Nathan and Hannah practice at. Hailey, the first time you stepped into the dojo with your uniform on, you were so proud and just ran around like crazy. All these years of watching your big brother and sister do their thing prepared you well, because you were able to blend right in with the rest of the class. You've been looking forward to playing battle ball, but since the class has been on the small side, you have been disappointed each time you guys play a different game at the end of class.
On the days you have martial arts, you are exhausted.
Finally, one day, you guys got to play a game like battle ball...you got to hit cones, instead of people. Hailey, you approved.
You guys have a 2,000 half push up challenge this month. Hannah, you are convinced that you will do 500 half push ups each day and finish the challenge in 4 days. Tonight you did 30 and decided to call it quits...let's see how you end up doing with this challenge.

That first week after we came back from camping, we had a 2 day virtual chinese camp. I didn't realize that it was the dragon boat festival, so we had to make a few batches of chinese rice dumplings (similar to tamales).
Hannah, you were my side kick and we knocked out 35 of these dumplings in 2 afternoons. One day we made sweet red bean, and the next day, savory mushroom and pork belly.
One of the highlights of chinese camp was making traditional chinese toys. In the picture below, you guys are making a rubber band shooter out of chopsticks and rubberbands.

Last Friday Hailey, you and I went to visit daddy at work. I took you down to the game room and we spent a good part of our afternoon playing all the things.

And we are currently dog-sitting for our neighbors. This is Polo, a 6 month old puppy. He's super cute, playful and you kids are going to do most of the caretaking of him. We have a schedule and you guys get to earn some extra spending money. I'm figuring out that Hannah will probably be the more responsible pet owner, but we will see how long this interest lasts.
The cardiologist called again earlier last week and said that other doctors agree that surgery is the best next step. We are awaiting a call to set up a consultation with the surgeon and a team of cardiologists to make sure we want to move forward and so that we know what to expect. I'm not quite sure what the timeline is, but I guess we will find out at the consultation. Hailey's surgery is kind of low on the priority list, so I think that will also factor into when it will happen.

In June, you big kids are going to church camp while I am teaching at the pre-school. Hailey you are in my class and so far it's been ok. The first day was rough, and I almost sent you to another teacher, but you quickly learned how our roles are different in class vs. home and you've been able to adjust and fall back into the school routine quickly.

Hannah you started the Xcel team gymnastics program and when I ask you about practice it's been "fantastic" every time.

 Until next time,

Love,

Mommy

The Post That Wraps up the School Year

Dear Kiddos,
This school year has literally flown right by! Nathan, you are about to enter 4th grade, Hannah, the 3rd grade and Hailey has one more year of pre-school before you start Kindergarten.

Well, it's been over a month since I made my last post, so I'll try my best to remember all of these highlights. (A recent tailbone injury has forced me to rest a whole bunch and I'm happy to report that my brain is slightly less foggy. I guess it takes a tailbone injury to force me to slow down and rest.)

Martial Arts
Hailey, you have been wanting to try martial arts for a long time. So on the last week of school, we decided to try it and you absolutely loved it! The joy that radiated from your face when you stepped into the dojo with Hannah's hand-me-down uniform was priceless.

But then the moment you received your first white belt from Mr. Herman, that was even more adorable!
The week before you two older kids had your belt test both of you received the never before seen (to me) honor of receiving 2 levels on your brown belts. I am so proud of you two!

Last Day of School

Hannah, your class threw an Oscars style party, complete with Oscar awards and ballroom dancing. You guys have been working hard the past 2 weeks learning different dance moves and I got to see you guys show them off during the party. I was very impressed and you guys did a great job. I know it was probably very awkward dancing with a....boy, but you pushed through that awkward feeling and tried to have fun.

Hailey, you celebrated the last day of school twice since you are a part of 2 different classes at school. We finally found a vegan pizza that you actually will eat and you were able to eat pizza just like the other kids did for the party.
Nathan, your class had a beach themed party. You guys had pizza, decorated shirts and played a few rounds of tunnel ball (once against the parents).
Both of you big kids' teachers will be resigning this year. We have been so impressed with the teachers at our school so far and are sad to hear about the teachers leaving. Teaching in Texas is stressful and teachers definitely don't get the compensation that they deserve.

Sunday School Wrap Up
Today we had a giant celebration for all of the families in the Bethany Kids program. We had sandwiches, but then a team came and hosted games for the kids to play and I even got a pie in the face. All the kids who wanted to participate got to join in on the action and it was such a great bang to end the school year.
TP gun competition

The kids had to wrap their team leaders up with TP

Hannah got in the bubble and got to knock another kid down.

Baseball
Nathan had a great 1st spring season. Your team did very well during the season and ended up having a 9-4-1 record, but during playoffs, you guys lost your first 2 games and was out of the tournament pretty quickly. Nathan, your batting order improved over the season too. You started out last at #12 and by the last game, you were #6. You are always coming up with strategies (sometimes very crazy and conveluted) and have a goal to pitch next season. Can't wait to see where you go from here!

He scored 2 runs this game!

Dog Sitting

We dog sitted for a friend while they went to California. We figured dog sitting might be just enough to scratch our itch for having a family pet. We have another pup coming in a few weeks who will stay with us for a month. You kids are excited about being able to earn some money by helping out with the walking and the feeding.

Other Miscellaneous Events

Nathan, your class has been working on a project that involves building kites. You guys worked so hard, only to have it be a windless day on the day of the festival. Nevertheless, all the kids were proudly pulling their kite along as they ran back and forth across the field. I'm surprised no one got clotheslined.

Hailey, you are always comeing up with random creations. One morning you made a bunch of little pets with houses to boot!

It's pretty fun to see your imagination come alive now that you are a bit older. I will often find you in saying a dialogue in your own little world. You tend to also play with the big kids better too!

Hannah, you have picked up a new hobby: wool felting. I had passed on a felting kit that I received from a friend and you fell in love with the process. You declared that you wanted to spend some of your money on supplies, so I took you to a local felting store to pick out materials. You've made a bee on your own and I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with next!

Dojo Picnic
Every year our dojo hosts a giant party where families bring potluck items to share and there is an epic water battle at the end. This was our first year attending and it was a lot of fun. It was kind of nice to see all the other families ranging from kids who are just starting out to people who have their black belts. It really is a great community.

So who knows what this summer will bring? We have a few plans, but much of it is very open. We will see.

Excited to spend the summer break with you all! Until next post (which will likely happen in a week because we are expecting an exciting week ahead of us)!

Love,
Mommy

Hailey's Heart Update, Easter and Major Milestones.

Dear Kiddos,
This past week we had an appointment with the cardiologist to make sure you big kids don't have the same heart condition that Hailey has. You both have completely normal hearts and things look good.
Hailey, the cardiologist is even more convinced after this visit that you may not have HCM, but that your thickened heart muscle is due to a membrane. She had suspected this before, but was told by another doctor that he didn't think this was the case. Well, something changed and she's seeing more evidence and will bring your case before 50 other cardiologist to discuss the best course forward. If they agree with her that you have an extra membrane blocking the flow of blood out of your ventricles and into your aorta, open heart surgery will be in your future. We will probably know in a month or so what the plan moving forward will be.

The visit to the cardiologist took 3.5 hours. You guys did a pretty good job of not revolting and were able to keep each other company. Afterwards, we got some vegan ice cream and somebody was very excited about not having to sit out.

For Easter, Hannah, you wanted to make something sweet so I basically told you, "go for it!" You looked up the recipe, measured out the ingredients, filled the cupcake liners and decorated the muffins. I basically just put the pan into the oven for you.
We had smoothies for brunch and this was a legit smoothie-stache. I just had to snap a photo. Enjoy the preview of what you will look like as an adult!
You girls had been begging to go to the pool and so I made a bet that you two wouldn't last 15 minutes in the cold pool. Well, you both proved me wrong. Blue lips and all, you two splashed and jumped in and out of the pool for about an hour before we went home.

This was Hailey's first public Easter egg hunt. You were very focused on collecting all the eggs!

Our neighborhood set up a great event with an Easter egg hunt and super cool photo op.

You big kids even made a little scavenger hunt for Hailey at home. She was super excited to find the clues that led to all the eggs being found.

We also dyed Easter eggs. Nathan, you didn't think you would enjoy it, but ended up wanting to colore more eggs.
You 3 had some good family time together over Easter weekend. We didn't have any obligations so we were really able to just rest and reflect on the real reason of the Easter season.

I wanted to capture the moment below to remember how excited you guys get about reading the back of cereal boxes. I can usually hear Hannah reading the captions to Hailey.

So some big milestones happened since my last post. Nathan, you were finally able to score a run after a legitimate hit that wasn't a walk. In kid pitch baseball, it certainly is difficult when you don't know where the ball is going to be. It was a beautiful line drive down the 3rd base line.
Hannah, you tried out for the gymnastics team and made it! This summer you start 2 hour training, 2 times a week.
Hailey, you are now able to ride your rainbow bike on your own! You sometimes have trouble with putting your feet down after stopping, but we can slowly work on that.

You 3 are the joy of my heart and I'm so happy to be your mom. Until next time,
Love,
Mom
